Santa Barbara de Nexe and the happiness of singing

Not very far away from the sea and the beaches of Central Algarve, the freguesia of Santa Barbara de Nexe is located within the council of Faro, the main council of Algarve and within the well known Golden Triangle of Portugal. This place and the surrounding area keep many charms and attractions for their visitors.

Santa Barbara de Nexe is about ten kilometres from the International Airport of Faro and of several beautiful beaches and golf courses of the area, like for example Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo Golf and Beach Resorts, which are probably the 2 most important Golf Resorts in the area.

Among their main economic activities, we have the tourism, trade, small industries, extraction and stone transformation, services and agriculture.

In the first days of every year, groups of men and women, accompanied of instruments, as the accordion and clarinet and saxophone, act in festivals in Santa Barbara de Nexe, Bordeira and surroundings, particular houses of friends and in bars of the area, intoning ballads and throwing improvised songs, greeting the new year and the friends, in a climate of authentic party, with social and political critics.

The accordion in Bordeira makes this part of the freguesias the capital of composers and performers of this musical instrument, among Jose Ferreiro Pai, the soul of the true corridinho and author of the famous corridinho, Alma Algarvia, and Joao Barra Bexiga, philosopher of the lived life and eternal romantic of the accordion.

The art of singing is one of the largest traditions of this place of Algarve.

The place also has a great cultural and historical patrimony. One of their main religious points is the Mother church that began to be built in the century XIV, in the place of an old small chapel already existent, where it was said that different miracles happened.

The Mother church of Santa Barbara de Nexe is one of the largest and more important in the entire rural Algarve and its structure suffered important interventions in the centuries XVII and XVIII.

The freguesias still has other points of interest, as the Small chapel of Santa Catarina de Gorjoes, as well as the various windmills and ancestral wells of water.
