The great party of the Algarve is in “Sao Bras de Alportel”
Sao Bras de Alportel is traditionally known by the most popular procession of Algarve. Today, the “Procession of Aleluia” is a historical and religious mark of the council and of the region.
The main streets of the town are beautified by thousands of roses and rural flowers, giving form to an extensive flowery crosswalk that on Sunday of Easter describes the course of the Procession, in S. Bras de Alportel. This party is one of the most genuine cultural and religious events of the country. This procession, of the Resurrection, takes place Sunday morning of Easter.
In the century XVII, the population of Sao Bras de Alportel began to realize the “Procession of Aleluia”, becoming quickly the most imposing processions of Algarve and the largest party of the council.
The event has an original carpet of flowers, in a course of a kilometre, to demarcate the route of the Procession. The festivity is also known by Flowery Torches.
In spite of being a very popular procession in the whole Algarve, it only continues to be realized in the council of Sao Bras de Alportel.

But the municipal district still has other places of interest, as the parks of the Fountain Férrea, of the Serra and of the Poets, besides the Fountain of Tareja and Bica of Sobreira, as the well of Castanhas, Mill of Bengado and Explanatory Centre and of Reception of “Calçadinha”. The tourists are still called to visit the Museológico Centre of Alportel and the Museum of the Algarve’s Folklore.
However, the most tourist point of the council is the “Calçadinha” of São Brás of Alportel.
For who prefer a more religious itinerary, it is indispensable to pass by the Chapel of S. Sebastião, as well as the Chapel of São José, Mother church, Church of São Romão and Episcopal Palace.
São Brás of Alportel is one of the five councils of Portugal that has only one “freguesia”.
